Beyond packaging

In this issue of Packaging, Warehouse & Logistics, we are pleased to feature Woolcool as our Thermal Insulated Packaging Company of the Month.

The story of Woolcool began in 2002, when packaging consultant Angela Morris was working with the National Trust and farmers in the Lake District. Following the Foot & Mouth outbreak, the farmers were looking for a way to sell meat directly to consumers and needed a packaging solution that could protect chilled products without relying on polystyrene. Morris explored a range of materials before discovering that wool offered the combination of thermal performance and sustainability the project required. The first wool-insulated box was developed for the National Trust farmers, laying the foundations for what would become Woolcool.

Formally established as a business in 2009, Morris founded The Wool Packaging Company as demand for the technology grew. Today, the company operates from a single site in Stone, Staffordshire, where its office, warehouse and manufacturing operations are based.

Woolcool manufactures sustainable insulated packaging for temperature-sensitive food and pharmaceutical products. Its core range uses 100% pure sheep’s wool and spans insulated boxes, bags, envelopes and pouches, supported by expertise in packaging design, product development, testing and qualification. The company has continued to expand beyond its original applications, with innovations including the FreightGUARDIAN pallet cover and LifeGUARDIAN, a high-performance passive thermal system qualified to provide more than 120 hours of protection in demanding temperature-controlled applications.

As a pioneer of sustainable thermal packaging, Woolcool has demonstrated that natural materials can deliver commercial-scale performance. Its philosophy extends beyond simply replacing one material with another, instead focusing on finding the right material for the right application while considering performance, sustainability and end of life. Alongside wool, the company is now exploring plant-fibre technologies through its Cemp range.

For Woolcool, differentiation lies not only in the packaging itself, but in the technical expertise and customer support behind it – an approach summed up by its mantra: “We go beyond the expected.”

“A key focus for us this year is the launch of LifeGUARDIAN, our latest innovation for the pharmaceutical and healthcare market,” said Josie Morris, CEO.

“LifeGUARDIAN has been developed for the transportation of high-value, temperature-sensitive products, combining high-performance thermal protection with a much simpler approach to packaging.”

“What makes the system particularly exciting is that it delivers exceptional performance without the complexity often associated with high-performance pharmaceutical packaging. Rather than requiring multiple specialist components, LifeGUARDIAN is designed to be simple to pack, easy to use and straightforward to integrate into existing packing processes.”

“The system uses simple compostable and recyclable materials, while providing the high level of performance and security required when transporting valuable and temperature-sensitive products.”

“For us, LifeGUARDIAN is a great example of what Woolcool is trying to achieve: high performance without compromise, but without unnecessary complexity. It brings together more than two decades of experience in thermal packaging, our patented technology and our understanding of the challenges our customers face to create a solution that makes the whole process simpler.”

Woolcool works across a broad range of industries, with major brand clients including Fortnum & Mason, Abel & Cole, Merz, Baxter Healthcare and Well Pharmacy.

“While our customers vary considerably in size and application, they share a common requirement: they need packaging that performs reliably, backed by technical expertise and a high level of customer service,” said Josie.

“As we look to the future, we are particularly focused on growing our presence within pharmaceuticals and international markets, where we see significant opportunities for our sustainable, high-performance thermal packaging solutions.”

“Using natural materials to change the world” is Woolcool’s guiding philosophy, underpinned by its belief that it ‘goes beyond packaging.’ For the company, sustainability extends beyond the material itself to encompass the entire product lifecycle, from sourcing and manufacture through to reuse, recycling, composting and end of life. Its commitment to responsible business is also reflected in its B Corp certification and its focus on the impact it has on customers, employees, communities and the environment.

The company is now entering an important period of growth and development, with international expansion a particular priority across Europe and the US. It also sees significant potential in pharmaceutical packaging, where sustainable thermal solutions must meet increasingly demanding performance requirements. Alongside this, Woolcool continues to invest in R&D, new natural-material technologies, technical capabilities, manufacturing and its supply chain as it works towards becoming a truly global supplier.

However, its ambition is not simply to sell more packaging. Woolcool wants to challenge the industry to rethink materials and demonstrate that high performance and sustainability can co-exist, particularly in sectors that have traditionally relied heavily on fossil-fuel-based materials.

Product development remains ongoing, with new liner sizes due to become available shortly. The company has also invested in rebranding its Woolcool liners, making information about their use and disposal clearer and more accessible to end users.

Woolcool emphasises that reuse is the best way to reduce the environmental impact of its liners, encouraging customers to find a second life for them through its #LetsBoxClever community. Liners can also be donated to animal shelters, schools, allotments and other community organisations, extending their useful life beyond their original purpose.
